Because the more time you spend there, the more you realize you were looking at it the wrong way.

That's what happened to me with 20 Hanahan Lane.

When we first started talking about this house, we talked about five bedrooms. There's certainly space that can function as a fifth bedroom, and for the right buyer, that's exactly how it might be used.

But the more time I've spent thinking about this home—and about the way people actually live in their houses—the more I've realized that calling it simply a five-bedroom home almost misses one of its best features.

So we're looking at it through a new lens.

Four bedrooms. And then you decide.

Need a fifth bedroom? There's an option for that.

Need two home offices? You can do that too.

An office and a TV den?

Guest space?

A place for teenagers to disappear with their friends?

The beauty of this house is that it doesn't tell you how you have to live in it.

That's one of those things I've learned about houses after years in real estate. The things that look like little conveniences when you're buying often become some of the things you value most after you've lived there.

Here, the Hilton Head Island public school campus is within walking distance, including the Early Childhood Center, Hilton Head Island IB Elementary School, Hilton Head Island Creative Arts Elementary School, Hilton Head Island Middle School and Hilton Head Island High School. The Island Recreation Center and Boys & Girls Club are nearby as well.

But the convenience extends far beyond school.

You can hop on Hilton Head Island's bike and walking paths and go.

Walk the dog.

Ride your bike.

Head toward Main Street.

Meet friends for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants along Skull Creek.

Spend an afternoon at Islanders Beach.

Cross Island Parkway makes the south end easy to reach, and Bluffton is convenient in the other direction.

This is one of the things I wish more buyers understood about the north end of Hilton Head Island.

You still get to live on this beautiful island.

You just happen to be remarkably close to real life.

And Then There's the Backyard

If flexibility is the surprise inside this house, the backyard is the part you won't forget.

There's a large deck surrounded by a peaceful wooded setting.

Online real estate searches are wonderful.

They're also incredibly literal.

Three baths.

Square footage.

Year built.

Check the boxes. Set the filters. Hit search.
