Giving Back with Heart: A September Evening with 100 Women Giving Back to the Lowcountry
By Allison Cobb, The Cobb Group | Brokered by eXp Luxury Realty
Our September meeting of 100 Women Giving Back to the Lowcountry brought together warmth, generosity, and a strong sense of purpose. Hosted at the always-welcoming Carlito’s Restaurant on Hilton Head Island, the evening included meaningful conversation, shared support for an important cause, and some seriously outstanding arroz con pollo (the best I’ve ever had, hands down).
This month, we proudly selected the Blessing Box Project Bluffton—now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit—as our featured charity. Their simple, effective, and community-centered mission resonated deeply with our group. And we were equally touched by another heartfelt nomination: Bluffton Community Kitchen, put forth by Ginger Kennedy. Both organizations are doing critical work to address food insecurity in our community—a reflection, perhaps, of the times we’re living in.
A Community Powered by Kindness: The Blessing Box Project
Started in 2024 by Bluffton local Kathy Straughn, the Blessing Box Project is built on one powerful idea:
“Take what you need, leave what you can.”
These small, weatherproof boxes are placed throughout Bluffton and nearby areas. They are stocked with non-perishable food, hygiene items, and basic essentials—accessible 24/7 to anyone in need. No forms, no red tape. Just dignity and kindness.
Now that the organization has achieved official 501(c)(3) status, it can accept tax-deductible donations, apply for grants, and expand its footprint across the Lowcountry. With support from individuals, businesses, churches, and groups like ours, the Blessing Box Project continues to grow—one box, one act of generosity at a time.
They were recently recognized as Bluffton’s “Best Nonprofit/Charity” in the Best of Bluffton Awards—an incredible testament to their impact.
Where Are the Boxes?

Honoring Another Worthy Nominee: Bluffton Community Kitchen
A heartfelt thank-you to Ginger Kennedy for nominating Bluffton Community Kitchen, another organization making a big difference for those facing hunger in our area. While it wasn’t selected this round, it sparked important conversation and we hope to see it nominated again in November.
When both of our nominations involve hunger relief, it speaks volumes. These organizations are on the frontlines of addressing real, urgent needs right here at home—and they deserve our attention and support.
