The Espresso Martini: A Holiday Cocktail With History, Heart & a Hint of Real Estate Magic

The espresso martini was created in the 1980s by London bartender Dick Bradsell after a model asked for a drink that would “wake me up and then… you know.” Today, it’s one of the most popular holiday cocktails because it’s both a drink and a dessert. In Bluffton and Hilton Head Island, it has become a festive favorite for gatherings, entertaining, and coastal holiday celebrations. Below: its history, Allison’s go-to recipe, and why this cocktail pairs beautifully with Lowcountry living and real estate conversations.

There’s something about holiday gatherings in Bluffton and Hilton Head Island that just feels… elevated. Maybe it's the coastal sparkle in the air, maybe it’s the way our December sunsets glow buttery-gold over the marsh, or maybe it’s that our community simply knows how to celebrate well.

But for me?
The holidays officially begin when someone hands me an espresso martini.

A cocktail that doubles as dessert?
That’s my love language.

A Little History: How the Espresso Martini Was Born

The espresso martini first appeared in 1983, when legendary London bartender Dick Bradsell was asked by a model for a drink that would “wake her up, then… keep the night going.”

His solution?
A bold, modern mix of fresh espresso, vodka, and coffee liqueur—shaken hard over ice until it turned into the glossy, foamy masterpiece we know today.

The drink skyrocketed through the 90s, disappeared for a bit, and then resurfaced as the chic cocktail of the 2020s. Strong. Stylish. Sophisticated. And absolutely perfect for the holidays.

Why the Espresso Martini Is the Perfect Holiday Drink

This is where the magic happens. An espresso martini is:

  • A cocktail + dessert in one glass

  • Light enough to sip after dinner but indulgent enough to feel special

  • Perfect for holiday parties, cozy nights in, or playing tourist around Hilton Head

  • A guaranteed crowd-pleaser

And if we’re being honest…
When you’ve been showing homes from Moss Creek to Hampton Hall to Forest Beach all day, an espresso martini is the perfect “I deserve this” moment. Side note, the Moss Creek Club House makes a wicked espresso martini and a darn good dirty martini. Make sure to ask for the blue cheese olives - dinner and a drink all in one.

A Personal Note: My New Miele Espresso Machine

This year, my espresso martini game is getting an upgrade—and I owe it all to my friend Mari, who was casually scrolling online and spotted a beautiful Miele espresso machine on Facebook Marketplace.

She immediately sent it to me—because she knows me better than anyone—and let me tell you… it was love at first sight. Mari is a star, a great friend, and truly the MVP of this story.

Now, as we redo our kitchen, this Miele machine has become my favorite new “toy.”
I adore a straight espresso shot in the morning. Quick, rich, bold, and the perfect little jolt before diving into real estate calls, listing appointments, or Moss Creek showings. Espresso is literally a shot of goodness—short, strong, and energizing.

And now that I have a machine worthy of a European café?
cannot wait to start making espresso martinis at home all holiday season long.

How This Cocktail Connects to Real Estate (Yes, Really!)

Here’s something I’ve learned after years of selling homes across Bluffton and Hilton Head:

Real estate is emotional. And great homes—like great cocktails—create moments.

An espresso martini says:

  • This home is warm and welcoming

  • This host pays attention to the details

  • This kitchen is built for living

  • This is a place where people gather

I can’t tell you how many clients walk into a beautifully staged kitchen, smell fresh espresso, see the right lighting, and suddenly feel at home.

The espresso martini just ties everything together—it’s a conversation starter, an instant mood booster, and, frankly, a very stylish way to toast to your next chapter.
