There’s something about a place that doesn’t try too hard—just good food, a laid-back vibe, and a little bit of soul. That’s exactly what Tin & Tallow delivers.

Tucked away on Spanish Wells Road, this unassuming new hotspot is a must-visit, whether you’re vacationing on the island or lucky enough to call Hilton Head Island home. With a limited menu, a killer smash burger, and an atmosphere that feels like a throwback to “Old Hilton Head Island,” Tin & Tallow is the kind of place you’ll find yourself coming back to again and again.

From Food Truck to Fan Favorite

Every great restaurant has a story, and Tin & Tallow’s starts with a food truck. Back in October 2023Tyler and Josi Bowdish brought their Midwestern culinary expertise to the Lowcountry, slinging some of the best smash burgers around. Their simple-but-flawless approach caught on fast, and in January 2025, they made the leap to a permanent location.

Now, instead of chasing their truck down, you can pull right into their easy-access lot on Spanish Wells Road, grab a bite, and hang out by the firepit or big-screen TV while enjoying one of the best meals on the island.

Why the Menu Works

The menu is short, sweet, and to the point, which is exactly why it works.

The smash burgers are where it’s at—thin, crispy-edged, juicy, and packed with flavor thanks to the use of prime beef tallow. If you know, you know. Wrapped in classic tinfoil, they’re the kind of burgers that make you pause mid-bite just to appreciate what’s happening.

If burgers aren’t your thing (hard to believe, but okay), their fried chicken sandwiches are just as legendary. Tin & Tallow isn’t about doing a hundred things okay—it’s about doing a few things perfectly. And they nail it.

A Nod to “Old Hilton Head Island”

One of the best things about Tin & Tallow? It feels like Hilton Head Island before it was a big resort town.

Want to know what I mean by Old Hilton Head IslandGive me a call.

I’ve been coming to Hilton Head Island since the 1970s, when my grandparents built a home in Sea Pines. They spent years driving up and down the East Coast from Connecticut, looking for the perfect place to retire. When they found Hilton Head Island, they knew this was it. Back then, the island was quieter, slower, and more connected to nature. There was only a drawbridge to get here from the mainland, and everything just had a different feel—less polished, more real.

While Hilton Head Island has grown into a top-tier resort destination, there are still places that capture that old-school magic, and Tin & Tallow is one of them. It’s unpretentious, relaxed, and all about great food and good company.

Easy to Get To, Hard to Forget

Located right off Spanish Wells Road, Tin & Tallow is the perfect stop whether you’re heading on or off Hilton Head Island. There’s plenty of parking, easy in-and-out access, and an atmosphere that makes you want to hang out for a while.

Whether you’re a longtime local or just visiting, this is a spot you don’t want to miss.
