As Realtors, we hear it nearly every week.

And it's a great question.

For many families, schools are one of the biggest factors when choosing where to live. They certainly were for us.

What many people don't realize, however, is that there isn't one simple answer.

Beaufort County isn't one town. It's a large geographic county stretching from Hilton Head Island and Bluffton on one side of the Broad River to Beaufort, Port Royal, Lady's Island, and St. Helena Island on the other. Locals often refer to these areas as "north of the Broad" and "south of the Broad."

When our family moved through the Beaufort County school system, one opportunity in particular changed the trajectory of both of our children's educational journeys:

I'll admit it.

When we first heard about IB, I wasn't entirely sure what it meant.

I quickly learned that it was much more than a collection of advanced classes.

Students take rigorous coursework across multiple subject areas while also completing independent research projects, community engagement requirements, and interdisciplinary learning experiences.

And in today's world, that matters.

One of the biggest misconceptions about college admissions is that colleges only care about GPA.

They don't.

Colleges also evaluate whether students challenged themselves with the most rigorous coursework available to them.

Our Family's Experience with IB

Our son graduated from Hilton Head Island High School with both a traditional South Carolina high school diploma and an IB Diploma.

Did it open doors?

Absolutely.

There were opportunities available to him that may not have existed otherwise.

But if you ask me what mattered most, it wasn't the college admissions process.

It was who he became during the journey.

The program pushed him to manage his time, think critically, communicate effectively, and see issues from perspectives far beyond his own experiences. It challenged him academically, but it also challenged him as a person.

It helped him become a student of the world.

Those lessons don't show up on a transcript, but they may be the most valuable part of the entire experience.

Today, our daughter has completed her first year of the IB Diploma Programme and is heading into her senior year. She's working toward earning both diplomas as well.

Watching her navigate the program has reminded me that growth rarely happens when things are easy.

The workload can be demanding.

Looking back, I don't remember a single IB exam score.

As a parent, that's what I value most.

Moss Creek sits on the Bluffton side of the Hilton Head Island bridge. If you looked at a map, you might naturally assume students there would attend one of the Bluffton-area high schools.

Instead, because Moss Creek carries a Hilton Head Island mailing address, students have historically attended Hilton Head Island schools.

That's actually how our family found the IB Programme in the first place.

Had Moss Creek been assigned differently, our children may have had a completely different educational experience. Instead, they were introduced to a program that challenged them academically, broadened their worldview, and ultimately became a defining part of their high school years.

It's a good reminder that when families are considering a move to Beaufort County, it's worth looking beyond a map and taking time to understand the unique educational opportunities available in each area.

A Quick Note About Schools and Real Estate
